Many children need support in emotional literacy. Others have behaviour or mental health problems at some stage that prevents them from fulfilling their full potential. Play Therapy can help children with these problems as well as helping to process traumatic life events, raise self-esteem, increase resilience and confidence. According to PTUK studies, between 77% and 84% of children show a positive change through the use of play and creative arts therapies when delivered to PTUK standards.
I am a fully trained Trauma Informed Practitioner and am therefore able to view experiences through a trauma lens with a focus on building a strong relationship with child and parent in order to listen to and empathise with their story. I have many years of experience working with children and families for a range of different reasons. For example; anxiety, bereavement, behaviour challenges, family breakdown and friendship issues as well as those who have experiences Adverse Childhood Experiences and/or trauma.
I work closely with parents/carers along the therapeutic journey in order to offer a joined up, supportive approach for both the child and family. I can also work with other professionals involved with the family, liaise with school and attend Team around the Family meetings if required.
I am currently engaged in an exciting six- month training programme to gain insight into the Synergetic Play Therapy technique created by Lisa Dion. This training will teach me about the neuroscience behind what is happening in the play therapy process, how to repattern a child’s nervous system, and what it means to become an external regulator in the playroom. I will learn how to work even more effectively with caregivers too. Caregivers will have a better understanding of their child and how their experiences have led to certain behaviours.
