Sarah Kruger

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art & History of Art from Goldsmiths University in London and two Master’s degrees in Expressive Arts & Peacebuilding from the European Graduate School in Switzerland and Applied Criminology, Penology & Management from the University of Cambridge. I am the Executive Director of Pepo La Tumaini Jangwani (The Wind of Hope in the Desert) in Kenya, a community-driven rehabilitation centre serving vulnerable children and diverse marginalised groups, including internally displaced people, prisoners, young offenders, and people living with HIV. I have worked extensively over the last 15 years with indigenous communities in sub-Saharan Africa, partnering with national governments and international humanitarian agencies. My multi-ethnic background and global experience enable me to work effectively with diverse cultures. Special interests include children’s recovery from adverse childhood experiences as well as adjustment and coping during times of transition, loss and separation. I co-authored a chapter on ‘Art Therapy in Africa’ in the 2nd Edition Wiley Handbook of Art Therapy, emphasising the importance of self-reflection on one’s identity as a vital process for creative therapists seeking to expand their understanding and therapeutic practices beyond Western paradigms of knowledge
