Sinéad McDonough

I have worked with children in a variety of contexts over the past 20 years and have an extensive background in the field of Applied Psychology. I have experience of working with children in care, at risk of care and with young people in places of detention. I hold a Higher Diploma in Psychology, Masters Degree in Forensic Psychology & PhD awarded through the School of Applied Psychology, University College Cork. I have also completed a diploma in Child Psychology via Kilroy’s College Dublin. My PhD research was prison based. The aim of this research was to inform on the forensic assessment of offenders. This research prompted me to commence supporting children to navigate online platforms safely. My work in school settings focused on equipping children to gain the necessary skills in helping them navigate the online world and being safe when online. I have a keen interest in evidence based/applied research that explores the impact of emerging technologies, online content, gaming and social media platforms on children’s mental health and well-being. I believe that it is as necessary to protect a child’s mental well-being in the online world as it is real world. I have lectured in many colleges and Universities on courses within the field of Forensic Psychology, Cyber Psychology & mental health & crime. I am currently completing my postgraduate diploma in Play Therapy via Academy of Play & Child Psychotherapy (APAC).
